OCM Ready To Help Athletes Fight For Rights

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) will immediately investigate any official complaint made on the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union's (MAAU) controversial move to reappoint an official involved in a molest case in Taiwan last year, for an important coaching position.

OCM honorary secretary, Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said, athletes who were not satisfied could bring up the matter to the association first before filing a complaint with the OCM.

"We are ready to hear the laments of athletes and follow up with action if the MAAU management keeps quiet and sticks to its decision," he said when contacted by Bernama, here, today.

Kok Chi said the OCM would not hesitate to form a special committee to investigate and fight for the rights of national athletes, especially the women athletes.

"Athletes have the right to demand their rights because they are the ones bringing home the medals, not the association or sports officials," he said.

Kok Chi praised national female pole vault athlete, Roslinda Samsu, and her colleagues for voicing out their dissatisfaction and fighting for their rights to be protected by the sports association.

"I am happy that there are athletes brave enough to stand up for their rights. This is the first time an athlete has done so in the history of sports in the country," he said.

Kok Chi said he would ask for an explanation from one of OCM's vice-presidents, Prof Datuk W.Y. Chin, who also represents OCM in MAAU.

"After we get an explanation from the OCM representative, we will discuss the matter at a meeting with OCM board members in early February," he said.

Meanwhile, MAAU president, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, when contacted, said the association would hold a special meeting to discuss the matter soon.

MAAU's action to appoint an official who was involved in a molest case in Taiwan last year as a national team manager has caused a stir among many, including Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

MOM sedia buat siasatan segera - Kok Chi

- Bernama

OCM call for prudence in spending funds provided by NSC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) want all National Sports Associations (NSAs) to be prudent in spending the funds provided by the National Sports Council (NSC) in view of the global economic crisis.

OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi urged the NSAs to be careful and prudent in managing their funds so that financial constraints would not derail their preparations for the Laos SEA Games in December.

“NSAs who solely depend on funds from the NSC should avoid unnecessary spending,” he said yesterday.

One way to reduce expenditure, he said, was for NSAs to be selective on athletes’ participation in international competitions.

“In this current economic situation, the lesser known sports will find it difficult to attract sponsors or contributions from the corporate sector,” he said.

The NSC’s allocation for this year has been reduced by RM60mil — from RM230mil to RM170mil.

In line with the reduction, NSC director general Datuk Zolkples Embong has also urged NSAs to be thrifty.

The NSC, however, would not reduce fundings promised for badminton, cycling and archery — the three sports identified as gold medal prospects at the 2012 London Olympics.

MOM gesa persatuan akur krisis ekonomi global

Datuk Sieh Kok Chi

- Bernama

OCM Wants NSAs To Be Prudent In Spending

http://www.bharian.com.my/Friday/Sukan/20090123003537/mainpix

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) urged all National Sports Associations (NSAs) to be prudent when spending funds provided by the National Sports Council (NSC) to weather the global economic crisis.

OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said NSAs, especially associations of less popular sports, must be careful and prudent in managing their funds so that financial constraints would not derail their preparations for the Laos SEA Games in December.

"NSAs that solely depend on funds from NSC should avoid unnecessary spending," Kok Chi told Bernama when contacted here today.

Kok Chi added that as a step to reduce expenditure, NSAs must reduce athletes' participation in international competitions and only select events that can really benefit athletes.

He added that if the NSAs are not careful in their spending, it will be the athletes who will suffer in the end.

"In the current economic situation, lesser known sports will also find it difficult to attract sponsors or contributions from the corporate sector," he said.

This year, the NSC was allocated RM170 million compared with RM230 million in 2008 and in line with the reduction, NSC Director General Datuk Zolkples Embong had also urged NSAs to be thrifty in their spending, he said.

Zolkples had also requested all NSAs to cater their programmes according to their allocated funds so that preparation of athletes would not be jeopardized.

However, despite the economic crisis, NSC would not reduce funding that was promised for three sports identified as gold medal prospects at the 2012 London Olympics, namely badminton, cycling and archery.

NSAs Must Bear Own Cost To Compete In AMAG - OCM

Datuk Sieh Kok Chi

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) wants National Sports Associations (NSAs) aspiring to compete in the First Asian Martial Arts Games (AMAG) in Bangkok from April 25 to May 3, to bear their own cost.

OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said since AMAG was more of a demonstration rather than a competition, NSAs must bear their own cost, including the Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf) and Malaysian National Silat Federation (PESAKA).

"So far both Makaf and PESAKA are interested in going but they must bear their own cost," he told Bernama here Friday.

He added that OCM and the National Sports Council (NSC) are not clear of the real objective of the championship and would study what kind of benefit the championship has to offer to our national athletes, he said.

"Although national exponents will get an easy chance to win gold medals at the championship, OCM will not offer or give out any incentives to winners," he said.

However, the OCM would not stop any NSA from taking part in the championship which is expected to see participation from 45 countries and organised by the Olympic Council of Asia.

Nine sports would be competed, taekwondo, muay, karate, muaythai, jujitsu, judo, kurash, wushu and pencak silat.

Suruhanjaya bela nasib atlit ditubuh

"Saya berpendapat kita masih memerlukan Kategori B," kata Kok Chi.

Athletes to get a chance to speak out on sports issues

PUTRAJAYA: It is rare to see Malaysian athletes speaking up on sports issues.

But now they will get a chance to speak up and be heard following the Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) decision to form a Ntional Athletes Commission (NAC).

Yesterday, OCM president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaa’far said that the OCM hoped that six athletes would be elected into the NAC.

“We want the athletes to know a lot more about the workings of the OCM. We want them to know why certain decisions are made — after all it is about the athletes,” said Tunku Imran after the first — Road to London — Olympic Games programme held by the Steering Committee here yesterday.

“And we also want them to be part of the OCM’s decision-making process. This has already been done at the IOC (International Olympic Committee) level,”

Tunku Imran said there were certain criteria for the athletes to fulfil.

“We will organise an election on a particular day. All six athletes will be elected and at least one has to be of a different gender. Only one man and one woman will represent the commission at OCM board meetings. They will have equal rights as any other OCM members in the decision-making process,” said Tunku Imran.

“They have to be a national athletes and have competed in major official Games. We are still looking into the details of this.”

This is the second time the OCM are trying to form an athletes commission. Previously, the athletes were nominated by their respective National Sports Association’s but the commission fizzled out due to a lack of commitment and interest from the athletes.

SPORTCHECK: Category B Sea Games athletes already paid

THE Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has reimbursed all associations whose athletes had won medals at the 2007 Korat Sea Games under Category B.
Category B athletes paid their own way to Korat and those who won gold or silver were fully reimbursed, while bronze medallists were paid half their expenses.

On Sunday, Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) and Amateur Swimming Association of Malaysia (ASUM) president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim claimed that he was still owed RM60,000 by OCM for expenses he incurred in sending athletes from athletics, aquatics and petanque to Korat.

But OCM countered that ASUM had claimed its monies last April while MAAU has yet to collect a cheque awaiting it at Wisma OCM.

"For the Korat Sea Games, nine from athletics, eight from swimming and 13 from petanque, competed under Category B, which means their expenses were borne by their respective national sports associations," the statement said.
"Of the eight swimmers, two won gold medals and two were bronze medallists. A sum of RM7,990 was refunded to ASUM on April 9, 2008.

"Of the nine from athletics, only two claimed bronze medals and as such 50 per cent of their expenses will be reimbursed. A sum of RM2,122 is due and is awaiting collection by MAAU.

"None of the 13 petanque athletes won any medals which means there will and as such no reimbursement was due to the Malaysian Petanque Federation."

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- From next month, national athletes will have their say in the Olympic Council of Malaysia's (OCM) executive board following the setting up of an Athletes Commission.

OCM president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar said with the setting up of the six-member commission, two of them will be eligible to sit on the OCM executive board as representatives of athletes.

"We feel it is a very positive step on behalf of the athletes as they would have better participation in our decision making process, as well as understand how OCM works internally and sort issues faced.

"This is very much in line with the policy of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and we are really happy with the development," he told reporters after an OCM board meeting here today.

On the appointment of the Commission's members which will be carried out via election, he said each national association registered with OCM would have a vote to determine who should be elected to the commission.

He said the OCM executive board members had already approved some of the basic criteria's and rules for the Commission, including the election procedures.

The OCM council meeting is scheduled for Feb 7, he said.

SPORTS Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will launch the London 2012 Olympics Action Plan next month with the hope that the programme, prepared by the National Sports Council (NSC), will see Malaysia win its first gold medal.

"We are focusing only on archery, badminton and cycling for the London Olympics and preparations did not start just today but five years ago. The plan and programme prepared by the NSC comprises the support system and also financial support." said Ismail Sabri at the Sports Ministry in Putrajaya.

While the NSC failed to meet its target of one gold medal in last year's Beijing Olympics, it cannot afford to fail in London as, by 2012, millions would have been spent on preparing the athletes.

"The athletes should progress from time to time and will also go through phases in the development programme. We do not want to focus on too many sports as we know our strength and weaknesses. So I think it's best we stick to our strength and try to achieve positive results," added Ismail Sabri after launching the Palestine Humanitarian Fund.

"We spend a lot of money in preparing the athletes and, of course, the public will hope for the best results and possibly a gold medal."
The 2012 London Olympics Programme was endorsed by the Cabinet Committee for Sports which met in December.

Chaired by the deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the Cabinet Committee for Sports went further into the development programme whereby a total of 346 elite athletes and a 5,344-member back-up squad have been identified by the NSC, of which the cream will be prepared for the 2009 and 2011 Sea Games, the 2010 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, and the 2012 London Olympics.

"If we look at what was endorsed by the committee we can see a long development programme is in place. This is good as the athletes who are involved in the 2012 programme have been a part of this plan for the last five years." he added.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri also confirmed that the rating system which was formulated by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) headed by Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan, will be implemented as soon as the ministry officials find it viable.

The rating system, which will be used as a guide to decide on the financial grant the government will give to national sports associations, was supposed to be implemented last year.

Athletics: MAAU's plan riddled with holes

Shahidan: MAAU has identified 15 centres to train 150 athletes
Shahidan: MAAU has identified 15 centres to train 150 athletes

NOT wanting to be left further behind in the development stakes, the Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) presented yesterday its 10-year 'Sure Win' plan which only served to raise more questions than there were answers.

The only thing notable of the plan, which was tabled at the MAAU's first board meeting of the year in Kuala Lumpur which lasted three hours, was its lack of structure and details.

The plan is ostensibly to ensure a continuous stream of talent to replace retiring or non-performing athletes over the next decade with MAAU identifying 15 training centres across the country to place athletes for development.

But while MAAU president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the centres will cater to 150 athletes, there was less clarity as to how the 'Sure Win' programme will achieve its aim.

"We have identified 15 centres for this specific purpose to train 150 athletes. This is part of our efforts to ensure we do not have to wait another 10 years to replace our top athletes," he said yesterday.
When pressed for more details, Shahidan veered off instead into a discussion of jogathons and fitness programmes, how to attract more sponsors and incentives for athletes breaking national records.

The plan makes no mention of targets, structured programmes for the athletes nor is there a timeline of when the any result can be expected.

Nor has the MAAU come up with a plan to qualify its athletes for the World Championships in Berlin in August with deputy president Karim Ibrahim saying they expect to receive two wild cards from the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF).

"No one has yet qualified on merit but there will be two wild cards from IAAF instead, one each for a male and a female athlete, which most likely will be taken up by Lee Hup Wei and Roslinda Samsu," said Karim.

On other matters, Shahidan said the Armed Forces Amateur Athletic Association will have to wait till the next meeting to know the outcome of its membership application.

Shahidan also lamented his failure to be reimbursed by the Olympic Council of Malaysia to the tune of RM60,000 for expenses incurred in sending athletes to last year's Korat Sea Games.

"I paid out of my own pocket, at the very least RM60,000, for athletes from athletics, swimming and petanque and after some of them won medals, I have yet to be reimbursed by OCM," said Shahidan.

MOM rombak sistem rating persatuan
