Tunku Imran Shocked By Stadium Roof Collapse, Wants All Sports Facilities Inspected

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar expressed shock over the stadium roof collapse at Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin stadium, in Terengganu on June 2 and wants all sports facilities to be inspected thoroughly.

Tunku Imran urged all state governments to do proper inspection and consult the federal authority experts before building any new sports facilities.

"For me it is very shocking when this sort of things happen in Malaysia. It's hardly a year since the stadium was built and it was a big project," he told reporters here after announcing a sponsorship deal for the Malaysian contingent to the Asian Youth Games in Singapore at the end of this month.

"All sports facilities are catalyst for sports development in the country and I hope this sort of things will not recur."

He added that the incident indicated that there was communication problems between the state government and federal authority experts including the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Public Works Department (PWD).

"This is a lesson that we have to learn from. How far we learn from this is another matter," he said.

Meanwhile, Chef-de-Mission for the Asian Youth Games, Marina Chin Abdullah hoped Malaysian athletes would perform well but refused to set any medal target for the championships.
