Specialist teacher training college for sports

KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs:

As part of its programme to beef up sports at the schools level, the government has decided to set up a specialist teacher training college for sports.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the teacher training college will train teachers to coach in various fields of sport.

It will also train technical officials needed for sport.

He said the professional coaches in various fields will be hired to train teachers.

“We hope to have the institute operational by next year, at the earliest,” he said yesterday after opening the 51st National Schools Sports Meet in Bukit Jalil today.
Muhyiddin said the government hoped with specially trained teachers and technical officers, the standard of sport will not just improve but the organisation of sports in schools will also improve.

He said the Ministry was setting up a Special Sports Development committee to plan, monitor and improve the standard of sports in schools.
He said the Ministry will seek expert help to improve sports in schools.

“The various sports associations and the Olympic Council of Malaysia will be invited to join the committee This is to ensure that there is no duplication in programmes,” he said later at a press conference.

Muhyiddin said a decision would be made on the teaching of Science and Maths in English in due time.

On the Port Klang Free Zone audit report which was tabled at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, Muhyiddin said the Cabinet had yet to make any decision on it.

He said it would discuss it again at next week’s meeting.
