Sailing: The winds are against Kevin

THERE should be a clear working relationship between foreign-based athletes and the National Sports Council (NSC) to avoid confusion and misunderstanding in the future. This is rather apparent in the case of national sailor Dr Kevin Lim, who faces problems securing funds for his preparations for the Beijing Olympics in August.

Kevin, who seems to have issues corresponding with the Malaysian Yachting Association (MYA), had written an email to both NSC director general Datuk Zolkples Embong and NSC Elite Athlete Training department head Ariffin Mohd Ghani for their assistance in securing his remaining grant of RM25,000 to pay for his flight, boat charter, accommodation and traveling expenses for several regattas prior to the Olympics.

In the email, which was also sent to Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi and Mailsport, Kevin stated that despite having submitted receipts amounting to RM 94,901 to MYA (through NSC), he has yet to receive the remainder of his grant and this is jeopardising his preparations for two regattas in Germany in less than 10 days.

“I have planned my campaign around this amount and need the remaining RM25,000 urgently, so why is MYA trying to sabotage my preparations?” questioned the Australia-based Kevin.

“After telling me to employ a coach, MYA have failed to pay him and are now trying to put the blame on NSC.

“By doing this, MYA are giving Malaysia a bad name in the international sailing fraternity.” Zolkples, during a biweekly meeting yesterday, decided that NSC will clear the entire outstanding amount to Kevin as soon as possible.

NSC also agreed to give an addition of RM15,000 for Kevin’s coach.

“We have limited funds but we are still going to give him the money as promised,” said Zolkples.

Zolkples, however, pointed out NSC were not informed about Kevin’s programme since his disappointing outing in the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

“We know nothing about his preparations since and suddenly we’re expected to fork out money,” Zolkples said.

“We appreciate his eagerness and enthusiasm but judging on his past performance, we’re not banking much on him.

“However, if Kevin proves us wrong, he will be rewarded accordingly,”
