Ismail: Review rating system

SHOULD an association with good administration but poor results be rated higher than one that delivers consistently but is not that well managed?
This is the question Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob has thrown at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and National Sports Council (NSC).

"I am not happy with the rating system. Associations should be judged on achievements, not just administration and other factors," said Ismail Sabri in Putrajaya yesterday.

"What is the point of having excellent administration but no results?

"What will happen is these associations (with good administration) will expect the same amount in development funds as those who are delivering. I don't think this is practical."
The rating system is supposed to have come into effect in January but Ismail has requested the OCM and NSC to fine-tune it.

Once in place, the ultimate aim of the rating system will be to determine just how much funding associations should receive.

And with the government on an austerity drive, there are bound to be repercussions across the board and Ismail Sabri wants prudent spending.

For starters, he has already decided that community sports complex, each costing between RM1.5 million and RM3 million, will be scrapped. About 50 were planned.

The ministry will instead build 1,000 multi-purpose courts, each costing RM100,000. The courts can be used for sepak takraw, futsal, badminton, volleyball and netball.
