Chin Returned Unopposed As MSBF President

JOHOR BAHARU, May 22 (Bernama)-- Datuk W.Y.Chin has been returned unopposed as the president of the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation(MSBF) for the 10 consecutive term.

The Penang-born Chin, who is also a vice-president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), was confirmed as the No 1 at the MSBF's Biennial General Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

There had been talk that Chin had wanted to make way for a new face at the helm of the MSBF after taking over as president way back in 1990, one year after the association was formally formed.

"But the members felt that he( Chin) still has the desire to serve and his experience would be invaluable to us," said secretary Melvin Chia, who was also returned unopposed.

Also returned unopposed was deputy president, Johor Baru-based Raymond Lim and the two vice-presidents, Wales Tan and Lim Yong Pah.

The MSBF, according to Melvin, has decided to take a more serious look at the promotion of pool.

"For so long we have only been concentrating on snooker and we have been quite successful at it but it's time we switch our focus to pool where the number of gold medals at stake in the Sea Games and also Asian Games is quite high," said Melvin.

The MSBF also decided at the BGM that sanction fees for the organising of tournaments would be kept affordable for snooker centre operators and that the fees would be lowered from the usual RM1,000 to RM300 only.

"We would like to see more tournaments organised but at the same time the snooker centre operators feel that the sanctioning fees is a deterrent," added Chia.

(All National players are only allowed to play in tournaments sanctioned by the MSBF).

Prof.Chin founded the Federal Territory Snooker & Billiards Federation (FTSBA) in 1980 and had helmed the MSBF, from its inauguration in 1986 till this very day.

Internationally, he had held the office of Secretary General & Executive Vice President, Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports (ACBS for 22 years); Executive Board & Vice President, International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF for 18 years) and Secretary General, World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS for 10 years)
