Ng Shu Wai
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) have given former national gymnast Ng Shu Wai the green light to go for a three-month coaching course in Hungary, beginning March.
The decision taken by OCM at their board meeting today, however, is in conflict with the stand on the athlete by the National Sports Council (NSC), who are not in favour of him attending the course for neglecting national duty by not preparing himself to compete in the Korat SEA Games last December.
"Shu Wai was given the go ahead because he is the only candidate who qualifies for the course from the country and also for the future of Malaysian gymnastics," OCM president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar told reporters here.
On NSC's stand on the matter, Tunku Imran said OCM had reached an understanding with the NSC on it and that "Shu Wai should be given a second chance".
However, the OCM would tie Shu Wai to a contract with them to ensure he does not repeat his mistake, he said.
Tunku Imran said Shu Wai was nominated for the course by the board, which also had a representative from the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF).
"As such, there is no need for a separate nomination from the MGF," he said.
Shu Wai, who contributed four gold at the Manila SEA Games in 2005, stirred up a controversy when he refused to train under a coach from China provided by the NSC in the run up to the Korat Games.
Because of his medal potential, he was allowed to train under his former coach from Bulgaria, but the gymnast absented himself for training sessions without valid reasons and was subsequently dropped from the national squad.
