Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, E-Sports In Asian Indoor Games



KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- Lion dance, dragon dance and electronic sports (E-sports) will be among the 17 sports to be contested at the 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau from Oct 26 to Nov 3.

The games, which will offer 151 gold medals through the 151 events up for contest, will see 39 countries participating with the initial list of participants recorded as 3,274.

Lion dance and dragon dance, which are steeped in Chinese tradition and normally featured during festivals, also become a competitive medal sport in Macau while those who prefer to use the computer to play games will also have an opportunity to win medals through the various E-sport events to be contested.

Hoop sepaktakraw -- a game played with five players in a circle who will attempt to sink the ball into a hoop similar to that of a basketball game but without using their hands (only legs or head) -- is another sport that has made its entry into the list of sports.

According to Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi, the Malaysian contingent of 95 men and 29 women would be headed by chef de mission Datuk Roy Rajasingham and are expected to take part in nine of the 17 sports up for contest.

"Participating in the games will be a new experience for many sports that do not feature in the programmes of other major events like the SEA Games, Asian Games or the Olympics," Kok Chi told Bernama here Monday.

Malaysi
a will not participate in aerobic gymnastics, snooker billiards, muay (Thai boxing), E-sport, finswimming, indoor athletics, indoor hockey and short course swimming.
