Create Olympic History, Urges Beijing Chef-De-Mission

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- Beijing Olympics chef-de-mission Datuk Hoh Kok Chye today challenged National Sports Associations to create history by delivering Malaysia's first Olympic gold medal next year.

"At the Athens Olympics, Malaysia did not win a single medal but our neighbour Thailand brought home three gold medals while Indonesia one," he told reporters at a media briefing at Wisma OCM, here.

He said Malaysia's first participation in the Olympics was at the Melbourne Games in 1956 and the country won bronze and silver medals for the first time in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympics in the United States.

"For the 2008 Beijing Olympics, we (Olympic Council of Malaysia) are looking for some improvement especially in terms of the number of athletes qualifying on merit, an increase in the number of sports participated and most of all Malaysia's first gold medal in an Olympic," Ho said.

At Athens, Malaysia's contingent consisted of 26 athletes who participated in 10 sports.

At the briefing, Ho also named some individual athletes and teams with the potential to make the target a reality.

Among them are the badminton team, Bryan Nickson Lomas, Yeoh Ken Nee/Rossharisham Roslan, Leong Mun Yee/Elizabeth Jimie (diving); Roslinda Samsu, Noraseela Mohamed Khalid and Robani Hassan (athletics); Josiah Ng and men's track team (cycling); Ng Shu Wai (gymnastics); Men's Recurve team (archery); Kelvin Lim (sailing); Nursuryani Mohd Taibi (shooting), and the Men's hockey and equestrian teams.
