SportCheck: Azalina favourite to bag OCM award

SPORTS Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said is the early favourite to win the 5th Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Women and Sport award when the nominees were announced yesterday.

The list of nominees was announced by OCM Women and Sport (WAS) Committee chairperson Low Beng Choo.

Also nominated are Rahika Abdul Samad, Nurul Izzati, Zarina Nordin, Warrant 1 KMR Sapiah Pilus, Sjn Siti Aishah Sudin, Hajah Che Zawiyah Bahari, Teh Lah Hoong, Teoh Tay Wah, Chee Shin Lian, Kok Mong Lin, Chee Geok Soong and Normala Abdul Rashid.

Normala, who heads the Women’s Unit of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) said she is glad to be one of the nominees. "I think, not only me, but all the nominees know it is not easy developing women in sport, and it is satisfying to know that people appreciate our work," said Normala, a former national football player.

"We have the various talents, but we have to create more awareness among women about the importance of getting involved in sports."
The award is in recognition of individuals who have contributed at all levels in helping to develop women in sport.

A previous recipient of the award is Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

The winner of the award will be announced on July 20 at the OCM Indoor Arena which will be attended by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah.

Also announced yesterday was the WAS programme for the remainder of the year which included the 3rd Children’s Right to Play Carnival to be held on July 28 at the Dataran Merdeka.

WAS has started a sport database where people who are interested in women and sports development are encouraged to register.
