KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will enjoy more local sports content when Astro Arena, the country’s first local sports channel, goes on air on March 26.

The 24-hour channel, which will be predominantly in Bahasa Malaysia, was launched by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek at the Wisma OCM yesterday.

Astro and the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) will collaborate and promote Malaysian sports events regionally and internationally.

“The launch of Astro Arena is timely and in line with the Ministry of Education’s recent announcement in making sports as a school subject,” said Shabery.

He added that Malaysians would be able to follow the nation’s sports heroes closely, especially in major events this year including the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore (August), New Delhi Commonwealth Games (October) and Guangzhou Asian Games (November).

The OCM president, Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaa’far, said that the new channel would also allow for smaller sports to gain air time and create greater awareness of their tournaments.

Astro Arena has appointed Lee Chong Wei, Esther Cheah, Daniel Bego, Mohd Hazizul Hasni Awang, R. Puvaneswaran, Mohd Aidil Zafuan, Mohd Zaquan Adha and P. Mariappan as the channel’s ambassadors. As ambassadors, they will be involved in sports clinics and road shows.
