OCM New Line-up Reflects 1Malaysia Concept

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar describes the new OCM line-up for the 2009-2011 term as in line with the 1Malaysia concept.

In line with the 1Malaysia concept, every ethnic group is being represented and it is up to the line-up to work hard because the OCM is a service-oriented organisation, he said.

Tunku Imran retained the post after former Perlis menteri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim yesterday decided to withdraw from the contest.

Tunku Imran said in the next two years the OCM line-up must work hard especially in developing domestic sports, implementing the rating system for the National Sports Associations and developing the Sports Channel (Sports TV) for its affiliates.

The main purpose of setting up of the Sports Channel is to provide better and wider coverage for sports activities by the affiliates, Tunku Imran said at the press conference after the 28th OCM general meeting here today.

In today's elections, incumbent Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan garnered 65 votes to remain as OCM deputy president defeating Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad who only managed to get 33 votes.

"It's really tough to retain this post and for this support from the affiliates, I will continue to work hard to raise the quality of sports in the country," said Jegathesan.

For the vice presidents' posts, Datuk A.Sani Karim made a comeback after a two-year break when he received 95 votes, followed by three incumbents Datuk W.Y.Chin (89 votes), Datuk Zakaria Ahmad (79 votes) and Datuk Roy Rajasingham (70 votes) while M.P Haridas received 59 votes.

The top four automatically become the vice president, plus Low Beng Chow (female) who retained the post uncontested.
