Najib Can Help Rejuvenate Sports In The Country

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) -- Sports administrators in the country believe Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's vast knowledge and experience in sports would help rejuvenate sports in the country.

Najib, 55, who is the Chairman of the Cabinet Committee for Sports Development since 2004, is no stranger to sports as he was also the Minister of Youth and Sports from 1986-1990.

The general perception is that Najib would certainly be a driving force in the country's pursuit for sporting excellence, especially at a time when the country is awaiting its first Olympic gold medal.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said based on Najib's profile, sports is nothing new to the Premier as he had inherited qualities of a leader in the field of sports from his father, the late Tun Abdul Razak who was the second Prime Minister of Malaysia.

"Maybe many might not know or remember, but Tun Abdul Razak was the President of OCM from 1959 to 1976 and Najib will be no exception as he too had held the post of Youth and Sports Minister," Kok Chi told Bernama here today.

Najib, who took his oath of office before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara, became the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia, after Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stepped down officially yesterday after leading the country for over five years.

National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong was also confident that Najib would be able to elevate the standard of sports in the country.

"NSC, as the agency to implement the government's policy in sports development, hope to receive continuous support from the Prime Minister in our efforts to successfully implement the sports agenda of the country," he said.
