KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- The current global economic downturn has forced the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to trim their financial assistance to national sports associations (NSAs).
OCM President Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar said the OCM board had agreed to off load RM300,000 from their account to assist 47 sports bodies under the purview of the council.
"Each affiliate (NSAs) would receive RM8,000 while ordinary members receive RM4,000," he said after chairing an OCM Board meeting at Wisma OCM here on Tuesday.
Though the amount may be insufficient to cover their operational costs, he said it would at least ease their financial burden as sports bodies incur numerous expenses including paying annual affiliation fees to their respective international bodies as well as conducting training programmes.
Tunku Imran advised NSAs to revise their unnecessary expenses and urged them to be selective in international competitions participated by their athletes.
"If the NSAs are not careful in their spending, it will be the athletes who will suffer in the end.
"In this current unfavourable economic situation, lesser known sports will also find it difficult to attract sponsorship or contributions from the corporate sector," he said.
"We know it is tough ride for everyone, but I hope we could get something out of this."
