Jega to head panel on hockey probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM)

deputy president Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan will head a three-man panel to look into the poor performances of the national hockey team in international tournaments.

Former international Yang Siow Meng is the other member of the panel.

MHF secretary Hashim Mohd Yusoff said that the third member of the panel would be picked by OCM.

The national team failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics after finishing third in a qualifying tournament in Japan in April.

They were also set the target of winning the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh in May but ended up finishing last in the seven-team tournament.

“We are happy that Dr Jegathesan has agreed to lead the three-man panel and we (MHF) will submit all the reports of the national team’s performances in international tournaments since 2004 to him,” said Hashim.

“I will inform the council members about the three-man panel during our council meeting on Aug 16.

“The three-man panel will review the reports and come up with suggestions one what needs to be done to improve the standard of the national team.”

Malaysia are now ranked 14th in the world and could drop even further after the Beijing Olympics.
