KUALA TERENGGANU, May 5 (Bernama) -- The 12th Malaysia Games (Sukma) secretariat has received over RM10.3 million in sponsorship from corporate bodies in the country, exceeding earlier target of RM8 million.
Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said apart from the main sponsors, there were also new ones which came on board in support of the country's biggest sporting event on May 31 to June 9.
He said the sponsorship augured well for sports development in the country.
"This is also a form of incentive for the athletes, that they will be able to attract sponsors if they perform well," he told reporters at the handing over of cheques from the sponsors here Monday.
A total of 15 teams comprising all the 13 states in Malaysia and a team each from Brunei and the Malaysian Schools Sports Council will participate in the biennial event.
The 12th Sukma offers a total of 1,313 medals, comprising 404 gold, 404 silver and 505 bronze in 31 events.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, will opened the Games on May 31 while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will officiate its closing on June 9.
Ahmad also reiterated his assurance that all the venues and facilities for the Games would be completed before May 31.
