Gymnastics: NSC wants its objection on record

THE National Sports Council (NSC) wants in on record that it does not support the Olympic Council of Malaysia's (OCM) decision to send former national gymnast Ng Shu Wai to Hungary for a three-month coaching stint under the International Olympic Council (IOC) Solidarity Programme.

This is the first time that NSC director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong has taken such a stand.

In response, OCM president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar (pic) said: "The NSC has objected to our decision to send Shu Wai to Hungary based his past track record and strongly believes that he is not the candidate for the programme. We will put their objection on record."

The OCM also agreed that its method of selection leaves a lot to be desired.

"We have reviewed Shu Wai's position and based on the candidacy and selection process, we agree that we have to be more thorough in the selection process. We also need to inform all National Sports Associations (NSA) and government agencies that such a scholarship from IOC is available." added Tunku Imran.
"We have not been very efficient in this matter and we will inform them in future about these scholarships."

Tunku Imran added that Shu Wai should consider himself very lucky to be given this opportunity and should use it to the best of his ability and return as a coach to work at the development level.

On another matter, 36 NSAs have responded to OCM's call on the rating system. The remaining 13 are expected to submit theirs in the next few days for the OCM and NSC discuss and finalise matters before presenting it to the Sports Minister.
