KUALA LUMPUR: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) will organise age-group championships for four sports next year.
The OCM secretary general Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said that they took the decision to have competitions for basketball, cricket, handball and water polo at their council meeting on Saturday because the four sports were not in the programme for the Sukma (Malaysia Games), which will be held in Terengganu next year.
“We may add one more sport to the list. For now, the competitions will be held in Kuala Lumpur. We have not finalise the dates but it will be definitely be before Sukma,” he said.
Kok Chi added that their main concern was whether the events will receive good support from the states.
“Some states may stay away due to the costs. These sports are not very big and sponsors are far and few. But we will work something out to draw good response to the competitions,” he added.
Kok Chi said that the OCM would be the coordinators for the championships while the national associations were required to provide the technical expertise.
