Tunku Imran To Be Challenged Again

JOHOR BAHARU, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- Two candidates have been nominated to challenge incumbent Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar for the post of Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) president.

When nominations closed today, two contenders for the post which Tunku Imran has held since 1990 taking over from Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah, the former Law Minister and FA of Malaysia president, came from within the association.

They are businessman Datuk S. Santha Kumar, an incumbent vice president and Hanafiah Samad, from the Malaysian Malays Cricket Association who was the former press secretary of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin when he was the Johor Menteri Besar.

At the association's previous election held two years ago, Tunku had also faced a stiff challenge from Johor Cricket Council president Datuk Dr Harjit Singh but managed to scrap through by a mere five votes to retain the post.

Dr Harjit who is no longer in the fray felt that his challenge then was to serve as a wake up call to the office bearers of the MCA.

"I wanted to pass the message to the leadership that they have to serve the affiliates. If not, there will always be voices of dissent. I did my part then but this time I am not interested. Furthermore I am based in Johor Baharu and it would be difficult for me to run the MCA from here," said Dr Harjit who runs a clinic here.

The race for the deputy president's post is also just as crowded as incumbent P. Krishnasamy would also be facing former deputy president Datuk Dr Amarjit Singh Gill, incumbent vice president C. Sivanandan and Santha Kumar (nominated for both posts).

For the post of two vice presidents, Malaysian Malay Cricket Association secretary Rosmanizam Abdullah joins former vice president Mahinda Vallipuram, Sabah Cricket association president Affendi Fuad Stephens, Kuala Lumpur cricket Association secretary Gopal Sreenevasan and incumbent Sivanandan in the race.

The post of secretary, held by Suppiah Ramasamy is also up for grabs as Suppiah is said to be eyeing for the MCA chief development officer post, leaving council member Mohd Sham Jalil and Negeri Sembilan Cricket Association vice president Mohidin Hashim to fight it out.

According to MCA executive secretary Ramesh Menon, three scrutineers from the Olympic Council of Malaysia are expected to be appointed to supervise the election to be held at the Kinrara Oval, home of the MCA, in Puchong next week.
