Kenyans Dominates McDonald's Olympic Day Run

KUALA LUMPUR, 29 June (Bernama) -- Three Kenyan runners made a clean sweep of the top three places in the men's 10km open category at the fifth McDonald's Olympic Day Run held at Dataran Merdeka, here, Sunday.

Bungai Elvis Kipruto clocked 24 minutes 28 seconds to clinch the first prize while his two other friends, Junus Kimtai was second (24.30s) and Geofrey Yego third (24.38s).

"We came across this run through the internet last month and we quickly registered ourselves. Although this run is a minor one, we took our training seriously," Bungai told Bernama.

In the women's category, three local runners emerged winners with Amutha Arugugan of Power Team clocking 32.20s to win the first prize. Norhasyikin Mohd Din (Police) clocked 36.44s to take second place while Lau Pui San (Selangor) with a time of 38.40s was third.

Marcus Sherwood of Kuala Lumpur clocked 28.34s to emerge champion in the men's veteran category while Peter Lessin of Germany was second with a time of 28.38s. Roslan Yasin of Sarawak who clocked 29.39s was third. In the women's veteran category, the winners were Tan Shih Ming (34.50s), Low Wah Leng 37.05s and Ng Yoke Har (38.26s), all of them from Selangor.

The winners received medals, certificates of participation, exclusive prizes from McDonald and hampers.

Meanwhile, McDonald's Malaysia managing director Azmir Jaafar said McDonald's is one of the official partners of the Beijing Olympic Games and that this Olympic Day Run was a global event.
