KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) today accepted an appeal by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to send its squad for the Korat Sea Games under Category A.
OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said winning the Merdeka Football Tournament last month proved that it was worth sending the squad under Category A.
"All expenses by the squad will now be borne by the OCM," he told a press conference here to announce the OCM's decisions of appeals by sports associations.
Yesterday, FAM secretary-general Lt Gen (R) Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad went to the OCM to plead the association's case for the team, made up mainly of under-23 players, be placed under Category A.
The team was previously placed under Category B based on the dismal performance of the senior squad in the Asian Cup campaign in July.
Besides the FAM, many sports associations also made similar appeals. They included those from athletics, judo, taekwando, baseball, cycling, tennis, lawn bowl, volleyball, fencing and weightlifting.
Athletes sent for the SEA Games in December in Korat, Thailand, under Category A will have all their expenses paid by the OCM.
However, sports associations will have to bear costs of theirs' sent under Category B and they will be reimbursed if the athletes bring home at least a silver.
Meanwhile, the OCM approved the selection of 18 other athletes for the Games.
They included Mohd Robani (high jump), Mohd Shahrrulhaizy Abdul Rahman (20km walk), Yuan Yu Fang (20km walk), Roslinda Samsu (pole vault), Noraseela Mohd Khalid (400m sprint) and Ngew Sin Mei (triple jump).
Sieh stressed that the OCM would not entertain fresh appeals after this.
