KL among 11 cities bidding for Youth Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur is among 11 cities in the world bidding to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president, Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar, said yesterday that the government through the National Sports Council (NSC) had requested them to put in an application to host the Games.

“The OCM's board members discussed the matter but we had very little time to make a decision.

“We submitted the application on Aug 21. It will be very competitive as there are 10 other cities wanting to host the Games. A few of them are strong challengers,” he said.

Imran noted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would be holding a workshop for all candidate cities on the Games guidelines and IOC questionnaire on Sept 17 and 18.

“Despite the government wanting us to bid to host the Games, the OCM believe the money that will be spent on bidding be wisely used for sports development or preparations for our youths participating in the upcoming Games,” he said.

The IOC Evaluation Committee will shortlist the potential hosts and the election and announcement of the host city will be made in February.

The other cities interested to stage the Games are Algiers, Athens, Bangkok, Belgrade, Debrecen, Guatemala de la Asuncion, Moscow, Poznan, Singapore and Turin.

The Games are for athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 years and the sports contested will be similar to those for the 2012 London Olympics but with a limited number of disciplines and events. – Bernama
