KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- Thirty-six young athletes aged between six and 18 today received grants from the Foundation For Malaysian Sporting Excellence (SportExcel) in a ceremony held at Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara.
SportExcel chairman Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar said nine of the recipients were from golf, one from cycling, four from cricket, five from tenpin bowling, one from artistic gymnastics, three from gymrama, four from squash, six from swimming and three from tennis.
"The amount in grants ranges from RM1,500 to RM5,000. Besides the grant, SpotExcel also provides accommodation, transportation, medical, equipment and coaching fees," he told reporters.
Tunku Imran, who is Olympic Council of Malaysia president, said that so far, SportExcel had given out a total of RM56,500 in grants this year compared to RM73,000 previously.
He said SportExcel would continue to focus on developing young talents from the grassroot level and called on the private sector to contribute to the effort.
"The private sector should see this as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR). The government, in announcing the recent budget, has provided tax incentives where CSR is concerned," he said.
